‘Believers should discuss sex’

Matters of sex are contentious and are usually shrouded in secrecy. Some people, especially God-fearing individuals, avoid discussing sex for fear of being called immoral.

Some people have even argued that airing or discussing matters of sex on a faith-based radio station is nothing but sacrilege.

It came as a surprise, therefore, when Trans World Radio (TWR) editor and producer, Ali Kalichero, was on Tuesday crowned the most organised and consistent reporter of programmes aimed at fostering communication and openness among couples on matters of sex.

Under the Bridge II Project, Galaxy Media Consultants have been implementing the national dialogue on couple communication campaign to increase communication among couples, within families, across genders, communities and the nation at large.

The campaign involved 13 radio stations broadcasting across the country and prizes were organised to award best producers and presenters of programmes that tackle issues of sex and family life.

The radios that participated were Dzimwe Community, Joy FM, MIJ FM, Star FM, Radio Maria, Radio Islam, Trans World Malawi, Living Waters Church, FM 101, Mudziwathu Community, Nkhotakota Community, MBC Radio 1 and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).

“This [award] testifies to the fact that matters of sex are of interest in all sectors of life, including religion. Discussing issues of sex doesn’t make one cease to be religious,” said Kalichero, bubbling with joy after receiving the award.

Galaxy Media projects manager, Benson Nkhoma Somba said the initiative was designed to generate debate among Malawians, including believers, to discuss sexual issues.

“It had been noted that most HIV and Aids situations are [aggravated] by lack of communication between couples on critical issues that affect their daily life, including sex life.

“That does not leave out believers; hence, the need to cast the net wider to ensure that even at the faith level, matters of sex should be discussed openly,” said Nkhoma Somba.

Other winners included Rachel Mhango of MIJ FM who scooped the second award whereas Radio Maria Malawi and Nkhotakota Community Radio received the third and fourth awards, respectively. n
